FanDuel offers customers a range of game types and contests, each of which is unique and provides a different way to play each sport.
The main idea of each game type and contest type remains the same, as you’d expect, but different strategies are required to impact how you build your lineup.
Football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, NASCAR, and MMA are all available to play at FanDuel Fantasy, although not all contest types are available for every sport.
Game Types
Full Roster
Full roster involves selecting players from games within the slate, fulfilling positional requirements as you go.
This is the most popular type of contest and has the most entries, with some full roster contests seeing over 100,000 people trying to claim the top prize.
NFL Sundays are particularly busy, and FanDuel offers contests for both early games and late games.
Single Game
Single game contests are only for individual events, whether a game, a race, or a fight.
Some sports require you to pick an MVP who scores 1.5x points but costs 1.5x the regular price, which can significantly eat into your salary cap.
There are no positional requirements in FanDuel single game for sports with explicit positions, so you have free rein to choose whichever players you like.
SoloStat
SoloStat is unique in that there is no salary cap and you’re instead choosing a trio of players who you think will combine to score the most of a particular stat.
That could be touchdowns in football or points in basketball, and it’s made clear in the contest title which stat you need to consider.
FanDuel SoloStat contests typically only pay out to the winner. Still, there’s a high chance that this will be shared between multiple entrants due to only having to pick three players and not being accountable for a salary cap.
Snake Draft
A FanDuel snake draft is normal fantasy sports, except it’s only for that day’s games. Once the number of entries has been reached, usually 10, each entrant takes it in turns to draft a player.
Once a player is drafted, no other team can take them, and they score points as usual for their game on that day or that weekend (depending on the sport).
Most snake drafts pay out on the top two places, with the winner taking the bulk of the prize fund and second place usually taking around 30%.
SuperFlex
SuperFlex is a FanDuel NFL-only contest and is almost identical to full roster, except you get to draft an extra skill position player instead of a defense.
You also have to draft one fewer wide receiver, giving you two in total compared to three in full roster, as this frees up salary to choose your SuperFlex.
While the flex position can only be a running back, wide receiver, or tight end, the SuperFlex position also includes quarterbacks.
Contest Types
Tournament
A tournament is the primary contest type, offering the most significant prizes relative to your entry fee. Entry fees range from as little as $0.25 up to thousands of dollars.
Each tournament has hundreds of entrants, with some having over 130,000 teams, so it’s no mean feat to win one, but the top 25-30% all get paid, and it’s always more than your entry fee.
Tournaments can be single-entry, allowing you to enter just one team or up to 150 teams to diversify your teams.
Multiplier
Multiplier contests simply multiply your money by a set amount if you win. The most popular type is ‘double up,’ which doubles your entry fee if you finish in the prize places.
Around the top 45% of entries are paid out, and the amount of money you win is the same regardless of where you finish the contest.
With that in mind, there’s no need to create the best team like you would in a tournament contest. Instead, you should focus on selecting consistent players.
Head to Head
A FanDuel head-to-head (H2H) contest pits you against one other person, with the winner taking the entire prize fund.
The entry cost of an H2H can be anywhere between $1 and $10,600, with FanDuel taking a fee of 10% to run the contest. For example, if you enter a $1 H2H contest, the winner gets $1.80.
50/50
FanDuel 50/50 contests are very similar to multipliers in that you get paid out the same amount regardless of where you finish within the prize places.
The main difference with a 50/50 is that the top 50% of players get paid out, and the amount you win is slightly under double your entry fee.
For example, in a $2 50/50 contest of 20 people, the top 10 entries win $3.60.
FanDuel Salary Cap
The FanDuel salary cap for regular Full Roster and Single Games varies by sport, and your total lineup value must come in below or equal to that.
Each player is assigned a particular value relative to the salary cap and number of slots available in the team, so the price of each player can change in different contest types.
The table below shows the salary cap for each sport.
