Senate Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros has raised serious allegations against government officials, accusing them of aiding illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) to circumvent the nationwide ban. These allegations follow Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s announcement of a tal ban on POGOs, citing their links to organised crime, including human trafficking, financial scams, and violent activities.
During a Senate forum, Hontiveros revealed that certain officials are allegedly advising POGO operators on methods to disguise their illegal operations as legitimate businesses, such as restaurants, resorts, or business process outsourcing (BPO) companies. “This brazen collusion undermines the law and raises questions about the integrity of our enforcement mechanisms,” she stated. Hontiveros urged stricter vigilance from local governments to prevent illegal operations and pledged continued investigations into the issue.
Government steps and international implications
The Marcos administration has taken a firm stance, announcing the immediate ban during the 2024 State of the Nation Address, with a phased closure of POGO operations by the end of the year. This move comes amid growing public backlash over POGOs’ negative societal impact and alleged involvement in criminal networks.
Hontiveros has stressed the severe consequences for officials found complicit in shielding POGO operators. “This is not just a question of legality but trust in our leaders to uphold justice,” she remarked. Meanwhile, investigations continue into prominent cases, including alleged espionage and financial fraud connected to the POGO industry.
Economic and international ramifications of POGO ban
The ban is expected to impact thousands of workers, including Filipinos and Chinese nationals, employed in the industry. The administration has promised to collaborate with the Department of Labor and Employment to provide alternative job opportunities for affected individuals.
Interestingly, the crackdown in the Philippines has prompted other countries, such as the Isle of Man, to consider attracting reputable offshore gaming companies, potentially reshaping the global online gambling landscape.
This decisive action reflects the Philippines’ growing commitment to addressing organised crime and fostering a safer environment. However, as Hontiveros’ allegations demonstrate, the challenge of enforcement and rooting out corruption remains significant.
