Since the reopening of the casino’s establishments in Puerto Rico on the 1st of July, The Casino Metro, based in the city of San Juan, has reported an exponential increase in the number of costumers visiting the facilities. José Maymó said that during the casino’s reopening day, the number of bets in the slots machines exceeded the normal amount. There were people waiting outside, since the casinos have been reaching their maximum capacity.

The reopening regulation states that the premises are allowed to host up to 75% of the total capacity, as a measure to ensure social distancing and avoid contagion. Casino Metro has reopened less than 50% of its facilities, and has been reaching the maximum capacity delimited, with a large inflow of costumers visiting the premises.
Puerto Rico counts on 16 Casinos operating, generating up to 3000 jobs. 90% of the sector’s employees had to stop their activities since March, due to Covid-19. However, it is estimated that between 60% to 70% of total sector’s employees will be able to return to work from this week, according to .
According to the Executive Director of Puerto Rico Gambling Commission, José Maymó, during the casino’s reopening day, the number of bets in theslots machines exceeded the normal amount they would have in a normal Wednesday before the pandemic. He also mentioned that outside some casinos there were people waiting to be able to enter, since the casinos have been reaching their maximum capacity.
Furthermore, the possibility of extending the opening hours, which has been up to date from 6 am to 9 pm, has also been discussed by the Government Authorities. Most of the casinos in Puerto Rico were used to operate 24/7.
According to SoloAzarLatinoamerica, the return of casino operations is also positive in the view of the president of the Puerto Rico Hotels and Tourism Association, Clarissa Jiménez, who declared that from the 16 casinos, about 7 are placed in Hotels that are partners of the Association. She also mentioned that they are very enthusiastic with the casinos’ performance post reopening.
