The players of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) squad ONIC Philippines, who were also the M6 world champions have renewed their licence with the Philippines’ Games and Amusements Boards (GAB) to continue their professional esports journey.
This confirmation came when the M6 world champions posted for a photo with GAB Chairman Attorney Francisco J. Rivera. The GAB post on Facebook stated, “Continue to burn bright, Champs!”
For the unaware, ONIC PH, the Philippines’ top-tier Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) team, emerged as the M6 World Champions in December 2024 after a stellar performance that captured the hearts of fans worldwide.
The team showcased exceptional skill, strategy, and resilience throughout the tournament, firmly establishing themselves as a dominant force in esports.
The grand final was nothing short of a spectacle, with ONIC PH facing formidable opponents Team Liquid ID in the grand final.
Displaying seamless coordination and innovative gameplay, they outmaneuvered their rivals in a series that kept viewers on the edge till last round, and won the game with 4-1 lead.
Key players Duane “Kelra” Pillas & Frince Miguel “Super Frince” Ramirez were instrumental in ONIC PH’s success, delivering game-changing plays and demonstrating remarkable composure under pressure.
This triumph marked a historic moment for Philippine esports, as ONIC PH became a symbol of excellence and inspiration for aspiring players, the team received worldwide acclaim.
The win also reinforces the nation’s reputation as a powerhouse in MLBB, a title that has captivated millions worldwide.
The Philippines has long supported the growth of esports, recognising it as an official sport since 2017. To promote its development, the Office of the President established the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), enabling professional esports players to obtain athletic licences.
By 2023, the country had over 43 million active gamers, with the esports sector growing at an impressive annual rate of 12.9 percent since its formal recognition.
In February 2024, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) further advanced this momentum by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Esports World Federation, aiming to drive innovation in gaming and digital sports.
The economic impact is substantial, with the esports market projected to reach and maintain a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.02 percent through 2029. The proliferation of smartphones and widespread mobile internet access has further fueled this growth, making gaming more accessible to Filipinos nationwide.
