Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) has announced the establishment of a at the Galaxy International Convention Center (GICC) in Macau to honour the life and legacy of its Founder and Chairman, Lui Che Woo. The space will be open to team members and the broader community from November 27 to December 3, providing an opportunity to pay tribute to one of the most influential figures in Macau’s business and cultural history.
Lui Che Woo, who passed away peacefully on November 7, 2024, at the age of 95, was a trailblazer in the gaming and hospitality industries, transforming Macau into a global entertainment hub. The memorial area, located in Hall B on the ground floor of the GICC, will feature a guest book for visitors to leave messages of condolence. The opening hours are from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on November 27 and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on subsequent days.

A legacy of vision and innovation
Born in 1929 in Jiangmen, Guangdong, and raised in Hong Kong, Lui began his entrepreneurial journey at a young age, overcoming adversity during Japan’s occupation of Hong Kong in the 1940s. From car parts and quarrying to property development, his ventures eventually led to the establishment of the K. Wah Group in 1955.
In 2002, Lui founded , seizing one of the six gaming licenses issued during Macau’s casino liberalisation. Under his stewardship, GEG emerged as a market leader known for its luxurious resorts and world-class entertainment offerings. The Galaxy Macau Resort and Broadway Macau became iconic landmarks, cementing Lui’s reputation as a transformative figure in the industry.
Dedication to philanthropy
Lui’s influence extended far beyond his business endeavours. A committed philanthropist, he donated to education, healthcare, and scientific research, establishing scholarships and building schools across Greater China. In 2015, he founded the Lui Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilization, which recognises contributions to sustainable development and the welfare of humanity.
His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including being named a leading philanthropist on the Hurun China Philanthropy List. In 1995, his accomplishments were commemorated with an asteroid named in his honor.
Looking ahead
As the community mourns the passing of Lui Che Woo, GEG has yet to announce his successor. A filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange confirmed that a new chairman will be appointed in due course, with an official announcement forthcoming.
Lui is survived by his wife, Chiu Kam Ping, and five children. His eldest son, Francis Lui, has already played a significant role in GEG’s operations and is seen as a natural choice for continuing his father’s vision.
