A week of transformation in Ethiopia: SiGMA Foundation’s inspiring journey

The dust has now settled after the SiGMA Foundation’s journey in Ethiopia, filled with inspiring events. Accompanied by previous expedition team members, SiGMA Group founder Eman Pulis and special guests, were able to witness the impact of past projects and inaugurate a new initiative.

Visiting the foundation’s previous projects, seeing the schools and classrooms alive with eager students, was a truly humbling experience. Meanwhile, the disability centre, initiated by the late Dun Gorg Grima, was bustling with activity and joy.

These sights are testament to how collective efforts can transform lives and in the case of Ethiopia, even communities. Reflecting on this, Eman Pulis, Founder of SiGMA Group, shared, “We’re at a point now where we, together with our clients are thriving, and it’s time to embrace a new purpose—to give back. Through the SiGMA Foundation, we have the perfect platform to make this happen.”

The centrepiece of the visit was the inauguration of the Women Empowerment Centre in Bonga. This new facility has already launched hairdressing courses, with sewing and embroidery classes also enrolling students. Women in the community are beginning a transformative journey to develop skills that will generate income for their families and uplift their lives.

Austin Cachia, Treasurer of the SiGMA Foundation, highlighted the centre’s importance, stating, “This project equips girls and women with life skills that uplift the entire community. We’ve seen real change in Bonga—families move closer for schools, the economy grows, and livelihoods are created. The impact is clear.”

Throughout the week, our team experienced life through a new lens. Witnessing firsthand the enthusiasm of the students and the hope radiating from the community was truly inspiring. Kelly Kehn, Co-Founder of DeFy the Odds, emphasised this by sharing: “The gaming industry recognises the importance of inclusivity, but it’s essential to truly embrace and celebrate our differences. When we do this, it brings real commercial, productivity, and business benefits.”

What’s Next for Ethiopia?

The SiGMA Foundation is more resolute than ever in its commitment to empower the Bonga community. Plans are already underway for an income-generating community hub to sustain the Women Empowerment Centre. This hub will support operational costs, including salaries and maintenance, ensuring the centre’s long-term sustenance.

Additionally, to tackle the issue of overcrowded classrooms, the foundation will construct four new classrooms in an existing school. This initiative aims to provide more children with access to quality education and alleviate the strain on current facilities.
