DRA bans two players for match-fixing

The world of professional darts was rocked by scandal as the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) handed down an eight-year suspension to 18-year-old Leighton Bennett (pictured above). He was accused and found guilty of match-fixing, providing inside information, and failing to cooperate during an investigation. Alongside him, Billy Warriner faced a ten-year ban for his involvement in the same scandal.

Details of charges

Leighton Bennett was once heralded as a rising star in the darts world. At just 18, he showcased immense potential, making waves in various tournaments. The scandal not only tarnished his reputation but also raised questions about ethics in professional darts.

The investigation into Bennett began after the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) flagged suspicious betting activity surrounding four matches in the Modus Super Series. The DRA’s findings revealed deliberate actions to manipulate match outcomes, a grave violation of sporting ethics.

Providing inside information to bettors is a severe breach of trust and integrity. In Bennett’s case, evidence suggested he shared confidential details, enabling unfair advantages in betting markets. Bennett was also charged with refusing to assist the DRA’s investigation. Cooperation is a critical requirement during such probes, and his failure to comply compounded the charges against him.

An eight-year suspension effectively halts Bennett’s career until August 11, 2032. For a young athlete, this duration is particularly significant, likely ending his aspirations of professional success. In addition to the ban, Bennett has been ordered to pay a fine of £8,100.23. This financial burden reflects the seriousness of his violations.

Billy Warriner’s case

Unlike Bennett, Warriner admitted to 19 of the 21 charges brought against him. His involvement included match-fixing, providing inside information, and organising betting schemes. Warriner’s misconduct extended beyond match-fixing. At a darts event, he was abusive towards an official and threatened his opponent. These actions resulted in a ten-year ban, marking one of the harshest penalties in recent darts history.

The bans have sparked widespread discussion among players, fans, and commentators. While many applaud the DRA’s firm stance, others lament the loss of young talent. Both players face immense challenges in rebuilding their lives and careers. The scandal serves as a cautionary tale for aspiring athletes about the consequences of unethical behaviour.

DRA’s statement

The DRA clarified that no other players were implicated in the match-fixing, aiming to preserve trust in the sport’s integrity. Bennett and Warriner have until December 14, 2024, to appeal their bans. Whether they pursue this option remains to be seen.

The DRA stated, “For proven breaches of DRA rules relating to eight allegations in connection with the fixing of the results of four matches, one related to failing to assist an investigation, and one for signing a contract with an unregistered agent, Bennett is suspended from playing in or being involved in any way in any DRA regulated events for a total period of eight years. The DRA in its case makes it clear that no other players were involved in the match-fixing.”

Ethical conduct is the cornerstone of any sport. Aspiring players must prioritise fairness and transparency to ensure long-term success. This case highlights the severe personal and professional repercussions of violating sports regulations.
