Jordan Kerr, a self-proclaimed “advantage player” known for his card-counting skills, has filed a lawsuit against Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, operated by Caesars Entertainment. The lawsuit stems from an incident in October where Kerr alleges, he was illegally detained and sustained personal injury on the casino’s property. This is not Kerr’s first legal battle with a casino, as he has previously pursued claims against Harrah’s New Orleans Casino under similar circumstances.
October incident
Kerr, who has frequented land-based casinos for over a decade, claims the incident began when casino management asked to see his identification. Kerr refused and attempted to leave the premises. According to the lawsuit, he was detained while trying to exit the casino, leading to what he describes as an illegal and forceful encounter.
The details of the alleged injury have not been disclosed, but Kerr’s legal team is pursuing compensation for what they argue was unlawful detention and violation of his rights. The lawsuit has raised questions about the treatment of skilled gamblers like Kerr, who often operate within legal boundaries but are unwelcome in many casinos.
Legal face off
Representing Caesars Entertainment is Robert Leigh Hebb, the principal of the Litigation Department at Semmes, Bowen & Semmes, a highly regarded legal firm in Baltimore. Kerr, on the other hand, has enlisted the services of Harris S. Ammerman, known for handling civil rights and personal injury cases.
This legal clash is expected to highlight the fine line between a casino’s right to protect its business interests and the rights of patrons, particularly those who employ legal strategies like card counting.
Kerr’s legal history
This isn’t the first time Jordan Kerr has taken a casino to court. In a previous case against Harrah’s New Orleans Casino, he alleged assault, false imprisonment, battery, negligence, trespass against chattels, defamation, and violations of his constitutional rights.
Kerr’s filings included allegations the local Sheriff’s Office conspired with the casino to jail him and violate his anonymity. In any event, the results of those lawsuits are unknown, and the cases do bear out Kerr’s willingness to litigate against powerful casinos for what he believes is wholesale mistreatment of skilled players.
Caesars and SIS Expand offerings
In a related development, Caesars Entertainment continues to expand its portfolio despite the legal battle. Meanwhile, SIS Content Services has extended its H2H Global Gaming League to multiple US states. This move, facilitated through partnerships with FanDuel and bet365, offers annual eSports events, reflecting the growing demand for innovative gaming options in North America.
