Betting companies authorised to operate in Brazil must use the “.bet.br” suffix on their websites. According to the Ministry of Finance (MF) regulation, these companies cannot use other domains. The determination is contained in Normative Instruction 11/2024 of the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA), which is linked to the ministry. The rule was published on Tuesday (5) and comes into effect on January 1st, 2025.
The companies must request registration on the website. The purchase will have to be renewed annually, through a fee payment. The SPA will examine the requests and check whether the addresses correspond to the regulated brands.
The sector’s regulations allow each company to operate up to three brands in the country. There will be one domain “.bet.br” for each brand.
Unauthorised bets are already being blocked
The most recent list from the Ministry of Finance included 100 companies authorised by the department, in addition to another 26 authorised by state entities, but not allowed to operate nationwide. The Betting Management System (Sigap) of the Ministry of Finance remains open to requests, which means that these numbers tend to increase.
In addition to the .bet.br ending, the regularisation includes the payment of R$ 30 million (around USD 5.27 million) to the federal government as a grant to operate for five years, among other requirements.
In October, the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) blocked over 2,000 betting and gambling websites that were not authorised to operate in Brazil.
According to Brazilian Law 14,790/2023, only companies with national authorisation will maintain operating betting sites throughout Brazil. Sites associated with state licenses will only be able to operate within the limits of their respective state. Sites or applications that do not have either a state or a federal license to offer betting services will be illegal starting next year.
