FIFA, football’s governing body, has officially announced the hosts of the 2030 and 2034 World Cups. Morocco, Portugal, and Spain will host the 2030 edition while Saudi Arabia will stage the 2034 World Cup.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during the Extraordinary FIFA Congress, which was attended by all 211 FIFA Member Associations and convened virtually. Aside from the hosts of the World Cup, FIFA said that three centenary celebration matches will be held in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
“In today’s divided world, where it seems that nobody can agree anymore on anything, to be able to agree on something like that is definitely an incredible message of unity and positivity. And, we need these messages today,” Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, said during the announcement.
“The FIFA World Cup is unique, and it is a unique catalyst as well for positive social change and unity because these tournaments, 2030, the celebration, 2034 – they are tournaments to unite, not to divide. They are tournaments, of course, to discuss, to debate, and to act. But most importantly, today, today is a day of unity and a day of celebration,” Infantino added.
Morocco, Portugal, and Spain leaders’ welcome news
Leaders from the football federations of Morocco, Portugal and Spain welcomed the announcement from FIFA. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation in a statement said that FIFA’s decision to award the hosting of the 2030 World Cup is a new testimony to the exceptional quality of the joint bid that was submitted. The Federation added that it is the result of two years of hard work and exemplary coordination between the three countries.
“This choice will not only contribute to the successful organisation of the World Cup, but will also reinforce a principle we have always defended: that sport in general, and football in particular, constitutes a powerful lever for economic, social, and human development,” Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation said.
For Fernando Gomes, President of the Portuguese Football Federation, FIFA ended with an evaluation that reflects the high standards the organisations have adopted in their way of work. “We want the 2030 World Cup to combine the memory of the competition with the celebration of itscentenary while achieving the necessary renewal that looks to the future. That is the challenge we are taking up,” Gomes said.
As for María de los Angeles García Chaves, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s Administrative Committee, she expressed her belief that the tournament will be “a World Cup that brings together generations.”
“This project is not limited to building and structuring countries, but also presenting them to the world united, united by a common passion represented by football,” Chaves said.
